The Three Streams, Explained Without Jargon

Clinical, Independence, Everyday Living. What goes where, and why it matters for what your family actually pays.

Every Support at Home service falls into exactly one of three streams. The stream decides how much the participant contributes and which other services that funding can pay for.

Clinical. Nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, allied health, continence care, wound care. The participant pays 0%. The government pays the full amount.

Independence. Personal care, respite, transport to appointments, social support outside the home. The participant pays between 5% and 50% depending on the means test.

Everyday Living. Cleaning, laundry, gardening, meal preparation, shopping, social support inside the home. The participant pays between 17.5% and 80%. Full pension households still pay at least 17.5%. This is the highest contribution stream.

Why this matters. A provider that switches a service from Clinical to Everyday Living, whether by mistake or otherwise, shifts cost onto the family. Always check the stream column on every statement.
