When to Request a Reassessment and When Not To

A reassessment can move classification up, down, or stay the same. Here is when to actually request one.

Request a reassessment when there has been a substantive change. That usually means a hospital admission, a new diagnosis, multiple falls, the loss of an informal carer, or significant cognitive decline.

Do not request a reassessment just because the budget feels tight or a friend got more funding. The assessment process is rigorous and if needs have not changed, the outcome will not change either.

The process. Write to My Aged Care, the assessor visits within 4 to 6 weeks, the decision comes through 2 to 3 weeks after that.

Have ready. A GP letter, hospital discharge papers, any specialist reports, and a clear written summary of what has changed since the last assessment.

A reassessment can result in the classification going down as well as up. Be sure the case is genuinely strong before requesting one.
